December is always a difficult month to keep pace with. It’s the end of the year, there are celebrations to be had, gifts to be bought, work to be finished, and of course, books to be read. with that in mind I had a change of heart regarding this month’s book and dived instead into the first of the Medoran Chronicles by Lynette Noni instead of what I had planned. It felt like an easier place to be, following Alex on her adventures in Medora, finding new friends, enemies and talents and all the joy and angst a new school and learning can provide.
Akarnae is the first book of a six book series set in Medora, a fantastical new world with echoes of earth but with a set of interesting rules and cultural differences (I’d appreciate a bubble door or two in my life) and a sentient Library which is the stuff dreams are made of. All dreams, nighmares as well as the good ones.
Overall I enjoyed following Alex, Bear and Jordan on their path through Akarnae, and later through wider Medora, unlocking secrets and getting to know each character a little better. It felt like a beginning, and there’s a definite lead in to the next book. Definitely worth checking out if you are into YA and enjoyed titles like Red Queen and Divergent.
Next month I’m taking a darker turn, it’s been a while since I delved into my horror tar pile and Aaron Dries provides the perfect incentive with “Where the Dead go to Die.” Being summer I might get the chance to read more than one. Wishing you happy reading and a great summer, winter or whatever kind of holiday you are having.
